MATTER OF
DESIGN (GER) Matter Of is a Stuttgart-based design studio exploring visual practices at the intersection of design and culture.
Matter Of will be represented by co-founders Marcel Mendler and Marian Rupp.
Matter Of focuses on transborder visual practices. We move across disciplines and media, drawn to the intersections of design and culture.
Together with artists, brands and cultural institutions, as well as through self-initiated work, we shape projects based on their specific context. These projects range from book, website, animation and identity design to exhibitions, installations, products, consulting and visual or written narration. We value caring relationships and open processes over fixed solutions.
Matter Of was founded in 2019 by Adrian Riemann, Fabian Schewe, Marian Rupp, and Marcel Mendler, and is based in Stuttgart, Germany. Among others, we have collaborated with art institutions such as the German Pavilion at the Venice Biennale, ZKM Karlsruhe, and Kunsthalle Baden-Baden, as well as with furniture manufacturer Thonet, the record label Juliet Records, the film production company new–land, and publishers including Distanz, Hatje Cantz, and Spector Books.
Over the years, we have taught several typography and design courses and received multiple awards, grants, and residencies. In 2020, we published our book Art in Public Space in Stuttgart with Kerber Publishing, and in 2025 we released New New Typography with Sorry Press.
